Some of our skaters competed off-ice during February: Joanie Sewert/2:41 ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon on the 26th; Beth Tarduno ran snowshoe races including Feb 4th Little Rodent 5 mile, Feb 18 Cummings Nature Center 10K and the World Championship 7.5K in Saranac Lake on a balmy 58 degrees on Feb 25th; Tom and Weston Rossborough and Jerry Roberts completed the Fleet Feet Snow Cheap Trail races with #6 on Feb 22. *Jerry Roberts and Tom and Weston Rossborough ran the Fleet Feet Snow Cheap #4 on the slippery hills of Cobbs Hill Park on Jan 25. Tom/29:50 was 1st M50-59 and 10/189 overall. Weston/34:24 placed 3rd M20-29 and Jerry/40:17 was 2nd M60-69.
*On Jan 28, Beth Tarduno/5K and husband John/15K ran in the Stone Wall Snowshoe race in snowy Mannsville. Congrats all!

Congrats to skaters Coach Julie Gehring and Kathy and Nate Feinberg! They competed on the Olympic Oval in Lake Placid on February 21/22 at the Jaffe Championships. Julie: 1st in 500, 1000 and 3000 and 2nd in 1500 in LSA division. Kathy was 1st in 1500, 5000 (1st overall) and 1000 and 2nd in 500 in L55 division. Nate placed 2nd in 500, 1500, 5000 (3rd overall) and 1000 in M55. That’s a lot of skating – way to go!

Kathy also competed in the US Masters Meet at the Pettit National Ice Center in WI on February 14-15 and placed 1st F55 in 500, 1000, 1500, 3000 and 5000. Yay Kathy!

A few off-the-ice recent activities: Jerry Roberts ran his 16th Race with Grace 10K on Thanksgiving Day with 1000 others and placed 7th of 24 M65-69. Jerry joined 6 RSST ladies-Beth, Tina, Holly, Donna, Marie and Cathy- for the Santa Bike Ride on December 3rd. 70 Santas/Elves rode around Rochester, stopping to sing carols along the way on a cold, windy day. Coach Tom Rossborough and son Weston ran in Battle of Bristol July 29 & 30 on some extreme hills at the ski center. On Friday evening they did the Vertical Kilometer up the face and Tom/15:09 was 1st M50-59 and 6th of 96 Overall; Weston/21:13 2nd M20-29.

On Saturday Tom/8:34;24 took on the hills in a 50K (31+ miles) and placed 1st M50-59, 3rd Overall on a rainy day in Bristol. Many DNFs in this race. Weston/1:34 ran the 10K that morning, placed 1st M20-29 winning his first race ever. Congrats Rossboroughs! Several teammates were there to cheer them on. Several of your teammates spent some time competing on track and trails the past week. On Friday, June 10 Donna and Jerry ran the McMullen Mile at Nazareth College’s track. Donna/9:10 was 1st F60-64 and Jerry/7:04 was 2nd M65-69.

On Wednesday, June 15 at Lucien Morin Park Coach Tom and Weston Rossborough ran the Dirt Cheap Trail Run #3 (of 6 this summer). Tom/29:46 was 1st M50-54 and 5th overall of series runners; Weston/39:50 was 3rd M20-24.

Congrats to RSST Coach/Skater Julie Gehring and to Master Skater Tina McKean! In May, Julie received her MSEd degree in Literacy Education from Medaille College in Buffalo and Tina receive her MBA in Business/Marketing from Sanders College of Business at RIT. Way to go ladies!


On Saturday, May 7th Holly Turner/2:00:05 ran the inaugural Right to Run 19K (approx. 11.8 miles) in Seneca Falls, home of the Women’s Rights Museum. Congrats Holly!   On Sunday, several RSST skaters and friends ran the Pink Ribbon 5K at Genesee Valley Park. Congrats to RSST skaters Weston Rossborough/1:54 and Holly Turner/2:18 (both in blue) who ran Fleet Feet Rochester’s Flower City Challenge Half Marathon on 4/24. They toured some of the city’s great streets and the Mt. Hope Cemetery, “home” of Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. And thank you to the RSST volunteers who staffed the water stop at Frontier Field.

Congrats to RSST master skater Joanie Sewert for completing the Boston 5K last Saturday, her first race since December knee surgery. Some of RSST’s Cobbs Hill running friends also ran the 5K and are pictured with Joanie (Mike V’s dgtr Emily, Jane K, Mike V, Kathy P and Joanie). 2 days later Mike ran his first Boston Marathon/3:55 and also Larry Beck, a former RSSTer now living in WA ran his first Boston/3:26. Congrats all!

Congrats to Coach Tom Rossborough who completed the 27.5 mile Breakneck Point Hike on 04/16 in Beacon, NY. The event included 10,000 of accumulated gain and recommended for only very experienced outdoorsmen. Congrats on a great finish Tom!

A very successful skating season ended in March and now RSST looks forward to the off-season Cobbs Hill workouts – beginning date TBA. Thank you to our dedicated coaches, president, board, parents, families and friends.

The annual RSST meeting will be held on Saturday, April 16th/9:30am at Merrill Lynch, 1241 Pittsford Palmyra Rd. in Pittsford. Please contact President Don Goodman if you have something to add to the agenda.



Congrats to RSST’s Kathy Feinberg who competed at the Master Allround Games in Leeuwaarden, Netherlands March 4-6! Karen Verrone traveled with Kathy and they were joined by six other skaters from the U.S. that many of us know and have competed with: John Diemont, Theron Sands, Joanna Walter, Vince Morris and NYers Glenn Corso and Marty Haire. Congrats to Fleet Feet’s Snow Cheap Trail Run finishers from RSST! This is a series of 6 races held every other Wednesday night during the past few months in dark, hilly, muddy, icy, sometimes snowy Cobbs Hill. At the conclusion of race #6 last night, Coach Tom was presented a medal for winning M50-59 for the series and was 3rd overall. Strong finishes by Weston Rossborough/39:59 5th in M20-29 last night and 5th in series; Donna Roberts/57:17, 2nd for F60-69 series; Jerry Roberts/57:16 2nd last night and 6th series M60-69 and Eva Culacova/57:16 10th in F50-59 race #6.

Congrats to Nate and Kathy Feinberg on their National Marathon Championships performance at the Pettit Center in Wisconsin February 19-20. They each won their age divisions in both the 25K and the 50K. Great skate Feinbergs! Next weekend they will head to the Netherlands to compete, along with RSST teammate Karen Verrone.

February news: 1. Congrats to all skaters at Empire State Games especially Evan Phillips of RSST in pre-scholastic with 2 medals, and Coach Julie Gehring with 7 medals in LT and ST. 2 former RSST skaters now training in Lake Placid won Golds in LT – Sydney Terpening and Fletcher Codd and Syd also came away with Gold in ST.

2. Congrats to Kathy and Nate Feinberg who competed at the LT U.S. Master Nationals and World Open Championships in Milwaukee. Kathy raced to 4 U.S. wins/F50 and dominated in the 1500 and 3000 World Open division. Nate raced to the 5000M national title/M55 and had strong finishes in all races.
3. Also in Milwaukee, Sydney won the Long Track Junior C Ladies Champion title and also set a new 1500M national record. Congrats Syd and Coach Tom Miller!

The Rochester Speed Skating Team meets 3 times a week at the Genesee Valley Ice Arena on Elmwood Avenue in Rochester, NY. There are approximately 45 skaters age 4-80 who participate in the training sessions. The Team’s coaches are all competitive speed skaters with a number of them having skated to national and international titles on the Master (over 30) level. Several of our teen skaters went on to train at centers in Utah, Michigan and Wisconsin with several competing on a world team. RSST conducts Learn to Speed Skate sessions several times during the season and anyone interested in learning the sport may email info@rochesterspeedskating.org for further information.
